Opportunities for Women in the Tech Industry
Should women pursue the tech world? Is there any chance for them to shine in this industry? Apart from men, women often encounter more barriers when it comes to tech. According to Deloitte, the tech industry is predominantly male with a ratio of about 3 men to 1 woman, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for us to shine. As a woman running my own business in the tech industry, this topic is near and dear to my heart. Let’s dive into this article and uncover the potential for tech-savvy women to thrive!
Women and technology
One of the key challenges women face in the tech industry is earning the trust and respect of partners and customers. When I first started running my IT company, I faced some misconceptions about women in tech. People sometimes question whether a woman truly understands technology when discussing technical topics.
For example, at tech events, people tend to approach my male partner for technology solutions rather than me, because when they see me, they often assume: “Maybe this woman specializes in Marketing or Sales, not Technology”. Even within my own company, some of my new staff are not sure about my coding skills since they haven’t seen my coding. Though meant in a lighthearted manner, it reflects the underlying perception that women may not possess the same level of technical expertise.
The second problem derives from the women themselves. Women may sometimes struggle compared to their male counterparts in engineering jobs, especially in the information technology industry. I wholeheartedly agree with this observation. Many women entering the industry have self-doubt, questioning their abilities and knowledge of technology. They may compare themselves to their male friends and think that they won’t be as good or won’t learn as fast.
There is a difference in the interests and motivations between men and women. It is rare to find girls spending hours sitting and playing games on the computer, as many guys do. This discrepancy often stems from a lack of early exposure to computers and technology. The starting point for girls is often later, which means they need more time to catch up compared to boys.
Let me tell you, confidence is a key. Women are just as capable as men in the tech world. All they need is the trust, support, and encouragement to pursue their passions in technology.

How do women effectively convince partners and customers?
It’s not a secret that women are often underestimated or overlooked in technical discussions, leading to doubts about their expertise. But there’s still a way out: Speak with Evidence.
Don’t say anything without proof, back it up with trusted links and technical references. When presenting a solution or recommendation, never forget to use reliable sources and concrete examples to build trust and establish your expertise. By doing so, we demonstrate that our ideas are grounded in solid knowledge. Screenshots or sharing links to expert articles can further substantiate our expertise.
The same principle applies to engaging with clients and partners. We can surprise them with our technical background and use that knowledge to consult them on solutions. Tell them
how that solution can be solved, what’s its pros and cons, how to build a budget plan, etc. By offering authentic proof and sharing our experience, we build trust and confidence in our abilities. It is a way to practice our persuasion skills and showcase our expertise effectively.
Sharing is a way to prove your ability
Another way for women to overcome doubts is sharing. Sharing technical problems and knowledge with others, regardless of age, gender, or experience, is a powerful way to demonstrate our skills.
Don’t shy away from sharing your knowledge and experiences, even if you’re still learning.
Think of it like this, by sharing our knowledge and experiences, openly and honestly, we can do two awesome things. First, we get to deepen what we’re learning and the skills we’re developing. Second, we help others by offering them a different perspective or a new approach to their challenges.
On the other hand, if we keep our studies to ourselves and remain silent, people might assume that we lack knowledge or aren’t progressing.
In my company, I encourage both men and women to engage in knowledge-sharing sessions. We don’t have to be an expert to share our knowledge; even when we learn something new, we can pass it on to others. Stop keeping this thought: “I’m afraid to share because I think others will judge me”. Remember, sharing isn’t about self-promotion, it’s about creating a space where everyone can learn from each other.

Gender balance in the company
Building a team with a healthy balance of genders is something we should deeply care about here. As a member of the management team that has both males and females, I understand the value of diversity in terms of gender, age, and skill set. In the tech industry, where males dominate, the inclusion of women has brought numerous benefits.
For one, it creates a more joyful and loving work environment. Women tend to be more emotionally engaged, leading to increased participation in activities and a greater sense of camaraderie. They contribute to the company’s well-being and take better care of its overall growth.
Secondly, having women in our company has had a positive impact on our male employees. They appreciate the diverse perspectives and unique strengths that women bring to the workplace. This, in turn, motivates us to actively seek out and recruit more talented women. Even if a female candidate may not be as strong as a male candidate in certain areas, we recognize their potential and provide them with opportunities. When women find their motivation and drive, their ability to learn and grow is remarkable.
I have witnessed many women in my company flourish when given the chance, dedicating their time and effort to improvement and progressing rapidly. This positive environment should be embraced by all management teams, as gender balance and diversity are crucial for sustainable development.

Learning and development experience
Finally, let’s talk about learning and development. In the ever-evolving world of technology, regardless you are male or female, it’s essential to keep the passion for learning alive. Take advantage of quality learning resources, seek out mentors, and set clear goals for your professional development. And remember, it’s okay to ask for help, we’re all in this together. By embracing a growth mindset and staying curious, you’ll pave the way for success in the tech industry.
Networking is another important aspect of career growth. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with like-minded individuals. Networking not only expands your knowledge and opportunities but also allows you to build a support system of peers who understand the challenges you may face.
In closing, I want to emphasize that the tech industry is full of opportunities for women. Yes, there are challenges along the way, but with determination, resilience, and support, we can overcome them. Together, let’s break down barriers, shatter stereotypes, and create a more inclusive and equitable future for women in tech!
